I love to open a new bag of wet clay. It smells like the sweet earth and endless possibilities. Inside, one might discover a coffee mug or a bear sipping lemonade. I usually find animals with tales about the most current of events and the oldest of truths.
My regard and knowledge of animal anatomy provides the framework for my creatures. But, it is the clay’s elasticity that gives my imagination permission for spontaneity, and the always varying glaze finish that allows a touch of unruliness. My hope is this strange mix of ingredients infuses each piece with an offbeat sense of realism and an invitation for the viewer to wonder about each piece’s unique story.
