Step back in time when you board this classic 34′ Westerly aft cockpit Sailboat. Runaway was built in Hampshire England in 1986 by one of Europe’s leading production builders of fiberglass composite sailboats. The beautiful lines and intricate woodwork are reminiscent of an earlier time.
This extremely seaworthy boat was acquired in Kemah, Texas by Bronson and Linda Hamilton before making the journey to Rockport in March of 2018. It is currently berthed in front of a Rockport Yacht Club member’s Key Allegro home. The Runaway has never been renovated so you can get a glimpse of what a boat built in 1986 would look like. The boat can sleep up to six people, with a main cabin, a V-berth and a spacious aft cabin as well as fore and aft bathrooms.
Touring this boat can provide “wanna be” boat owners with a wonderful example of the type of sailboat that can easily be within the reach of anyone with a desire to experience life on the water. She drafts 4’10” and is equipped with a main sail, 3 foresails, and a spinnaker. When not under sail, it is powered by a Volvo Pena diesel engine. According to her previous owner, she has made several trips to Vera Cruz Mexico and back. The boat is equipped with an air conditioner, which is a necessity for a live aboard boat docked along the coast of Texas. Because the boat was made in England, you won’t find many of them in the United States, but there is actually one other Westerly in Rockport, and it is also docked near the Rockport Yacht Club, which is where the Runaway will be temporarily docked during the Studio, Home, and Boat Tour. One caution about touring the Runaway. In order to enter the cabin of the boat, you need to go down backward via the companion way ladder about seven steps.
