Betty Shamel, Rockport TX

Guest artist of Bonnie Lou Prouty

I began Mud Hen Pottery in Rockport after a 30-year career as an art teacher. My formal education includes the BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, MFA from the University of Guanajuato at San Miguel de Allende and MA from Texas A&I University, Kingsville.

I have worked in various media from oils to batik and sculpture, but became fascinated by clay. I enjoy sketching the boats, birds, and marine life of the gulf coast, gathering images and motifs for my art. My themes reflect an interest in the lives and representations of saints, and as always, my love of the Texas Gulf Coast. As a colorist and a figurative painter and sculptor, my pottery extends this character to whimsy and a humorous point of view. While much of my work is functional its main aim is to delight the child in us.
